Five Koreans nabbed for online illegal gambling in Pasig City

In line with government’s intensified campaign against illegal gambling, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operatives of Cybercrime Division (CCD) yesterday announced the arrest five  Koreans for online illegal gambling in Pasig City.
NBI Director Dante A. Gierran said the Koreans  were arrested as a result of the implementation of a search warrant for violation of PD 1602 (Prescribing Stiffer Penalties on Illegal Gambling) in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012).
The arrested subjects were identified as Cheonlji Kim, Ilhwan Yang, Wonsup Yang, Jeong Hyeok Kim and Moon Kyu Kang, all of whom are Koreans.
The NBI said the suspects operated or managed an administrator web page for online sports betting, sports toto and online casino. They also used this kind of modus to facilitate money laundering activities. Moreover, the Koreans usually chose exclusive subdivisions as their operation venue to hide from the law enforcement arm of the government.
After due coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP), CCD operatives conducted the operation in the target area wherein the suspects were caught in the act of operating the said illegal activity.
Gierran stressed that unlicensed operations as that of the suspects deprive the government millions of pesos in revenue adding that they are in effect robbing from Philippine government.
Charges for violation of PD 1602 in relation to RA 10165 were filed in an inquest against the arrested Koreans before the Prosecutor’s Office in Pasig City with an expected penalty of prision mayor or six years and one day to 12 years if found guilty by the court.
