Manila and Meralco plan ahead on partnership concerns

The City of Manila headed by Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada and the Manila Electric Co. bolstered their ongoing partnership in several areas of concern in a strategic planning session at city hall last December 6.
Senior vice president Alfredo Panlileo, speaking for Meralco, cited various projects of the city with cooperation their firm, involving disaster preparedness, sports development, prepaid electricity, Baseco housing and the MVP Technology Center at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod Maynila (PLM), among other things.
Panlileo said the prepaid electric service of Meralco has 85,000 customer availment and more than half or 45,000 of which are households in Manila.
These Meralco customers are able to cut their consumption and/or realize savings of from 15 to 18 percent of their usual bill, said Panlileo. He was joined at the meeting by senior AVP Andy Sumayao and Spectrum’s Jose Reyes.
Estrada noted one of the first official acts he did as mayor of Manila when he assumed office in July, 2013 was to find ways to settle the city’s P613 million debts to Meralco incurred by the previous Lim administration.
The succeeding year, Manila under Estrada was awarded the Meralco Local Government Unit Luminary Award.
Estrada cited Meralco for being one of Manila’s biggest taxpayers. In 2016, Meralco was No. 8 among the biggest payers of the real property tax at P59,211,343.77.
The mayor called Meralco and Manila as “stewards for the future” as they jointly plan to give Manilenos enough supply of electricity in the years and decades to come.
Meanwhile, Meralco’s Ryan Gutierrez presented plans on how to cope with the power requirements of the forthcoming five huge reclamation projects in Manila Bay. He cited the future development of Manila substations for efficient power delivery in the city.
