Manila Chinatown holds biggest Chinese New Year celebration

Attended by huge crowds, the Manila Chinatown Development Council held a grand celebration to welcome 2018 Chinese New Year and Year of the Dog at the Lucky Chinatown Mall.
Celebrated in Binondo, the Guinness  record holder as world’s oldest Chinatown, the annual New Year celebration featured the presence of Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Zhao Jianhua.
Prominent business leaders also witnessed the New Year countdown midnight Thursday.
Congresswoman Naida Angpin also graced the evening with the Manila Police District and Bureau of Fire protection providing security to the big event that was not marred by a single untoward incident.
The evening countdown  displayed state-of-the-art fireworks that livened up the evening.
This was followed by performances at the Atrium from Silent Sanctuary and soapdish on Chinese New Year’s Day yesterday at 2 p.m. featuring cultural shows, Feng Shui forecast seminars with Johnson Chua, a dragon dance plus traditional Chinese mascot performance around the Binondo area.
For his part, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada in a prepared statement  welcomed the yearly event and lauded the organizers’ effort in making it a successful one.
“Having part of the said event, the City of Manila on my second term as chief executive of the city, would like to commend the organizers and give recognition to the contribution of the Chinese community to the city by way of paying huge taxes that were used in financing projects beneficial to its poor residents. Thank you for the support and, most of all, ‘Kung hei fat choi’ to all of you Chinese brothers,” Estrada said.
