No-nonsense anti-smoking campaign set in Marikina

A no-nonsense anti-smoking campaign will be implemented citywide by Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro in keeping with the Executive Order (EO) signed by President Duterte last year.

Teodoro revealed this in an interview recently, saying he had already ordered the police and other concerned city agencies to implement fully the ban on smoking in public places in the city along with public utility vehicles.
The mayor said they had been conducting information campaign citywide for the purpose but this year (2018) they will fully implement the total smoking ban and warned that those who would be caught would be penalized.
Last May 16, Duterte signed Executive Order 26 which was timed for the World Tobacco Day celebration on May 31, 2017.
The signing of the EO 26 was one of the campaign promise of Duterte to impose a nationwide smoking ban similar to what has long been implemented in Davao City where he served as mayor for over two decades.
Duterte had shunned criticism to his policy, especially those coming from the tobacco industry.
EO No. 26 titled “Providing for the establishment of smoke-free environments in public and enclosed spaces,” listed as a prohibited act smoking in “enclosed public spaces and public conveyances, whether stationary or in motion, except in DSA (designated smoking areas).”
The EO provides standards for a spot to be considered as a DSA which may either be an open space or a separate area with proper ventilation.
For a DSA inside an enclosed space, there shall be no opening that would allow air to escape into smoke-free area of a building or conveyance, except for a single door equipped with an automatic door closer.
A DSA shall also have a non-smoking buffer zone and the combined area for a DSA and its buffer zone should not be larger than 20 percent of the total floor area of the building or conveyance.
The DSA is also barred from being located within 10 meters from entrances, exits, or any place where people pass or congregate, or in front of air intake ducts. There shall be no more than one DSA in a building, and the chosen area should bear proper signage.
Teodoro said they will be strictly monitoring public places identified as non-smoking areas and also they would strengthen their resolve to keep school children from being hook not only on cigarette smoking but also on illegal drugs.
The police are under orders to make a strong campaign against smoking, illegal drugs but also in maintaining peace and order in the city.
Also, the city government wanted all city ordinances to be implemented as they are geared towards making the city livable and investor friendly.
