PNP bares increasing number of surrenderers

The Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Oplan “Tokhang” has continued to gain ground with the increasing number of surrenderers and remained bloodless since its reactivation last month.

Director Camilo Pancratius Cascolan, chief of the PNP-Directorate for Operations, said for the third straight week since the reactivation of “Tokhang” on January 29, there has been continued rise in the number of surrenderers— bolstering the demand reduction strategy of the PNP’s war against illegal drugs.??
From January 29 to February 22, the PNP, through the Directorate for Operations (DO), consolidated 2,489 Tokhang activities with 2,489 surrenderers nationwide.
Police Regional Office 10 recorded the highest number of Tokhang activities with 993 and listed 292 drug surrenderers followed by National Capital Region Police Office with 454 Tokhang activities with 227 drug surrenderers.
On the other hand, from Dec. 5, 2017 to Feb. 22, 2018, police drug enforcement units arrested 8,773 drug personalities from 5,636 operations conducted while 88 died in police operations on PNP’s continuing intensified anti-illegal drug campaign.
Project Double Barrel Reloaded which was relaunched on Dec. 5, 2018, drew first blood when an anti-narcotics operative in Cebu City was felled by gunfire in an anti-drug operation that went awry when the target opened fire.??
Police Officer 2 Evie Espina fought toe-to-toe with notorious drug dealer Jovelio “Juvie” Franz, a notorious distributor of drugs in Minglanilla and neighboring towns in Cebu City. He is also a gun-for-hire and the No. 1 high-value target on the list.?Elsewhere across the country, “Tokhang” house-to-house visits had been uneventful and bloodless until the third week of implementation.
It will be recalled that President Duterte last year halted the PNP’s anti-illegal drugs campaign following controversies on the killing of Korean Jee Ick Joo in January 2017 and the allegation of extra judicial killings.
Duterte tapped the undermanned Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to take the lead in the war against illegal drugs.
