Securing Feast of Nazarene celeb a big challenge to MPD

Top officials of the Manila Police District (MPD) consider a big “security nightmare” the forthcoming 2018 “Traslacion” or the Black Nazareno procession scheduled on January 9.
In an interview at his office yesterday, MPD spokesman Erwin Margarejo said it is a big challenge to secure around 15 to 20 million devotees who are expected to flock in narrow roads of Manila but expressed confidence, saying this is an opportunity to strengthen their force in meeting the challenge.
Margarejo reminded the people who are planning to participate in the annual event to prepare themselves by gathering strength and ensuring their health and also bring with them food, water and medicine during the big procession.
“Bringing unlawful materials such as firearms, bladed weapons and other harmful materials may cause trouble to authorites while expensive cellphones, jewelry and huge cash are not advisable to avoid inconvenience,” Margarejo explained.
A police assistance desk will be installed in many locations and medical help such as ambulances will be readied during the whole day of the precession.
For his part, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said full force of the city government will be tapped ranging from Department of Public Services to oversee the preparation of the routes of the procession and is tasked to haul expected huge tons of garbage that will be left by the millions of devotees. Manila Risk Reduction Disaster Office will be assigned to meet any eventuality during the event, Manila Health Department was tasked to provide medical services, including ambulances and emergency section of each six city- owned hospital.
“We will be providing all the facilities of the city government during the event after coordinating with some national government assistance that will be available as per needs of the Quiapo Parish officials, gaya ng matagumpay na taon taon selebrasyon ng Pista ng Poong Nazareno sisiguruhin natin lahat ito ay muling matugunan,” Estrada said.
Aside from the city government full resources, the whole force of the BFP, PCG, DPWH, DoH as well as other NGO who yearly volunteered to give their services for free is expected to meet the annual feast that is considered the Mecca of Catholics that is held in Basilica Manor of Quiapo Parish.
