Suzuki Vitara drive to La Union

Rise in shine, for the All-New Suzuki Vitara media driving experience, that flagged-off from the Suzuki Auto Kalookan dealership with fifteen All-New Suzuki Vitara units, mostly in Atlantis Turquoise Pearl, were waiting to be driven. Here, media participants feasted on a sumptuous buffet breakfast and soon after, some vehicle details were presented by the Suzuki team, with a few and inspiring words from Mr. Shuzo Hoshikura, Suzuki Automobile general manager. After which, vehicle assignments to the media participants were given, then it was time to head towards the parking area to see and feel, first-hand the All-New Suzuki Vitara 1.6 GLX 6AT. Suzuki Philippines, wanted a smooth flowing secured convoy to and from the destination for the participants, and what better way to travel. But before that, just a backgrounder, we just had Asean delegates a few weeks back and they had a very secured road travel with no untoward incidents, well this driving experience was privileged to be escorted by five HPG on 2-wheels and a cage on the tail end, on sweep duty. This writer normally experiences this type of secured driving experience, during overseas test drives and is good to know, it is adapted locally.
The No. 2 Suzuki Vitara 1.6 with leather and suede interior, was assigned to DJ Neil Pagulayan of dwLL Mellow 94.7FM, Mr. Gilbert Chao of Mindanao News and to this writer. First to drive was Gilbert and this writer (six feet in height) sat at the back seat and the legroom plus the headroom, were more than adequate for a vehicle in this segment. Even without tint film on the windows, windshield and even from the panoramic sunroof, the climate controlled air-conditioning system cooled the vehicle in no time and the 10’ size monitor that could be viewed clearly, even from the outside was wow! By the way, the video and audio system wired to six speakers, emitted superb listening pleasure sound, that would lengthen all the passenger’s patience during rush hour and on road trips.
On the first stop, at the Souq in San Fernando Pampanga, one of the activities to pursue was for the media participants to play some board games. An early lunch was served, and it was very filling. Good thing this was not an eco-run event, otherwise this writers team would be overweight.
Now for the second driver, Neil was next to drive and this writer was now seated on the front passenger seat, that had the capability of lifting the seat height. So far, the split fold rear seat and front passenger seats are comfortable and recommended for long road trips but of course stop overs are recommended.
Next stop was a petrol station along SCTex for some call of nature requirements and the much awaited, driver change. It was this writer’s turn to drive the All-New Suzuki Vitara 1.6 GLX 6AT on the longest and thrilling route from SCTex to our destination at Thunderbird Resorts and Casinos in San Fernando City La Union. All passengers in, seat set to the proper driving position, buckled up and push button to start, Suzuki! We have ignition.
The All-New Suzuki Vitara 1.6 GLX 6AT upon seated at the helm of the driver’s seat, this writer felt at ease, from the ergonomically designed seats, steering wheel diameter size, the shifter position, pedal location and the clear front view, an indication that this would be a fun run. Our vehicle position was just behind the first vehicle with Team Suzuki on board. It was also good, that they complied, when this writer tailed them and the All-New Suzuki Vitara 1.6 GLX 6AT was stable at extra-legal speeds and was even asking for more. The standard cruise control was appreciated and came very handy, while driving on the tollways.
The power plant under the bonnet was a M16A 1586cc 4-inline 16-valve VVT DOHC MPI petrol engine that could produce a maximum power of 115hp/6000rpm and a maximum torque of 156Nm/4400rpm mated to a six-speed automatic transmission was delivered to the front wheels. Since the very brand-new vehicle had barely two digits on the odometer, braking had to be done lightly for proper fit between the brake pads and four rotor discs to avoid premature wear in the future. Although in cases of emergency the ABS with EBD plus BA will join forces and prevent the unexpected, same thing with the dual front airbags, front side airbags and curtain airbags, they are on standby and will do their job when the situation requires. While driving around the twisty roads, plus downhill runs, the vehicle handled well with just a bit of lean and the electric power steering was point and shoot. The vehicle was also equipped with safety aids like ESP, hill hold control and brake assist. Acceleration was on demand and overtaking vehicles with the proper momentum was achievable and with ease. The vehicle in terms of riding comfort was firm but comfortable, the way this writer prefers. Hopefully, in the days to come, a longer test drive could be requested.
The All-New Suzuki Vitara 1.6 comes in (3) variants the 1.6 GL, 1.6 GL+ 6AT and with the vehicle tested the 1.6 GLX 6AT, that are available in (7) attractive colors-cool white pearl, silky silver metallic 2, galactic gray metallic, cosmic black pearl metallic, atlantis turquoise pearl metallic, horizon orange metallic (GLX) and bright red five metallic (GLX).
That is the All-New Suzuki Vitara 1.6 GLX 6AT, a vehicle well built in Hungary, priced at value for money level and for sure, fun to drive, perhaps that was why it received an award, for the Best Subcompact Crossover in the recent 2017 Car of the Year Philippines.
