AFP sees more NPA surrenders due to discontent to their leaders

For the first two months of the year, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has recorded 2,263 regular members and supporters of the New People’s Army (NPA) who surrendered nationwide – a massive downtrend in the communist strength due to sustained efforts by the government to bring about peace.

Lt. Col. Emmanuel Garcia, AFP-Public Affairs Office chief, said that as of March 4, a total of 607 regular members of the NPA yielded to government authorities while 1,656 surrenderees are categorized into Militia ng Bayan (MB), Underground Mass Organization (UGMO) members and mass supporters also joined the mainstream.
Garcia said that based on the accounts of the former communist rebels, more of their comrades are already disgruntled and may take the path they took in surrendering to the government.
“The AFP is expecting more surrenders as former rebels and supporters expressed discontent inside the CPP-NPA. Statements coming from the former rebels disclosed that they are dissatisfied with the false promises of their leaders and the pattern of deception being done by the NPA terrorists,” said Garcia.
“The AFP assures the public that operations against the communist terrorists will continue, to protect the people and communities from terrorist atrocities,” he added.
Military data showed that the overwhelming number of surrenders happened in Davao Region where the bulk of the NPAs force is also situated.
A total of 2,036 or 90 percent of surrenders come from Davao Region.
Most notable were the series of mass surrenders in Compostela Valley province where 371 members of Underground Mass Organization (UGMO) and supporters surrendered in Maragusan last 20 January, 193 UGMO members and supporters surrendered in Monkayo last 03 February, and 166 UGMO members and supporters in Montevista who surrendered on 19 February.
“The massive surrenders of NPAs and their supporters were attributed to the combined focused military operations, intelligence efforts, civil-military operations and re-integration efforts and peace and development programs of the AFP, PNP, and local government units,” Garcia said.
Meanwhile, the third batch of former NPA rebels flew to Manila from Butuan City and Davao City for a dinner with President Duterte in Malacañang.
Maj. Ezra Malagtey, spokesman of AFP’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said that 190 ex-rebels took two Air Force C130s yesterday via Davao City International Airport and Bancasi Airport.
The 190 former rebels previously operated in Regions XII and XIII, Provinces of Davao Del Sur and Davao Del Norte and some from Davao City.
“They are part of the 683 former New People’s Army (NPA) rebels from different parts of Eastern Mindanao that were presented to the President on December 21, 2017, at Panacan, Davao City,” said Balagtey.
Balagtey said that the activity is part of the continuing activity of reintegrating the former rebels in the mainstream society and to give them a better perspective on life.
The FRs will be toured to Luneta Park and Intramuros for their historical and heritage trip. They will be welcomed on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Camp Aguinaldo and it will be hosted by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero.
