Honasan, Sotto confident Bong Go will face Senate probe on frigate deal

An opportunity to respond to the charges, was what Sen. Gregorio Honasan yesterday said on Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go appearing before the Senate to answer charges on his alleged intervention to supposedly favor a certain supplier in the acquisition of new weapons system of the Philippine Navy.

“This is good for democracy, due process and the rule of law,” the chairman of the Senate committee on national defense and security, said.
Honasan was reacting on reports on the President standing in approval of the idea of Go being subjected to a legislative inquiry into the controversial P15.5-billion frigate acquisition project of the Philippine Navy.
Duterte, in a speaking engagement, said that it could even be Go’s ticket to a Senate seat.
Honasan said anyone who is qualified, can run for public office.
But in the spirit of transparency, Honasan said, it will give those who are said to be involved, the opportunity to respond to the allegations not only in the court of public opinion.
“But more importantly in the proper courts of law if there is evidence to support the allegations,” the senator said.
Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, considered a Palace ally, expressed confidence that Go is willing to defend himself on the issue.
“I’m sure he will attend because he has nothing to do with the issue,” he said.
Go, widely-known to be a highly-trusted by the President, alleged to have intervened in the selection of Navy’s warships’ combat management system.
