Lawmaker calls for probe on Ifugao activist leader’s murder

Ifugao Rep. Teddy Brawner Baguilat has called for an inquiry into the killing of Ifugao environmental activist Ricardo Mayumi, saying the dastardly crime happened as “the military continues its attacks against indigenous peoples (IP).”
Mayumi was killed on March 2 in Ambabag, Kiangan, Ifugao by at least two assassins.
He was the leader of the Ifugao Peasant Movement and has long championed the rights of IPs in Ifugao.
Baguilat said that while the motive for his killing is still to be determined by the Philippine National Police (PNP), it is clear that his death was because of his activism and his opposition to some infrastructure projects in Ifugao.
“His case is unfortunately not an isolated one as for years, indigenous peoples have been targeted by those who want to push their own agenda even if it would mean trampling on the rights of indigenous peoples who have long been marginalized in this country,” Baguilat said.
His death adds to the growing list of IPs who have been killed, incarcerated and villified around the country, said Baguilat in House Reoslution No. 1752.
“The committee on indigenous peoples should be at the forefront of determining the proper implementation of laws that protect IP rights,” the resolution said.
