Leila commends Carpio’s refusal to testify vs Sereno

Detained Sen. Leila de Lima yesterday commended Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio for refusing to testify against Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno in the impeachment proceedings against her in the House of Representatives.

“He is a breath of fresh air in the judiciary today,” the senator said in a statement.
In a time where self-preservation and self-interest dominate the political scene of kowtowing to Malacañang, there are men and women who refuse to be so beguiled by power and protection, she said.
They instead, stand up for and defend their institutions from the assault of tyranny, de Lima said.
“They will all be remembered when this is all over, the few and brave souls who dared to stand up against the impunity of the Lower House and the regime it serves,” the senator said.
De Lima was reacting to reports on Carpio declining the invitation to testify against his colleague in the impeachment complaint against the Sereno.
Carpio said he could not shed light on the issues being hurled at Sereno as he has no personal knowledge on these matters.
In doing so, de Lima said Carpio has managed to preserve whatever integrity and honor is left in the High Court as he now symbolizes both the independence and forthrightness of a court under siege from the Lower House and Malacañang.
De Lima further noted that Carpio, among the SC justices, most have a gripe as he’s the most senior justice to be bypassed for the CJ position yet he is now exemplifying the dignity and circumspection among the justices for refusing to be dragged into the highly politicized impeachment proceedings against Sereno.
The SC justice is being asked to testify on Sereno’s alleged falsification of the temporary restraining order in the case of Senior Citizens partylist, transfer of trial of the cases against Maute group, among many other administrative matters and internal rules and procedures of the High Tribunal.
