Malacañang cites rift in SSS officials’ non-reappointment

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque Jr. yesterday said the Social Security System (SSS) will be more efficient without quarreling among members of its board.

Roque made this remark a day after after President Duterte made the decision not to renew the appointments of SSS Chairman Amando Valdez and Commissioner Jose Gabriel “Pompee” La Viña.
“I think the reason why the President removed them from office is because he thinks the SSS will be more efficient if there is no rift in the SSS board,” he told reporters in a media interview in Tabuk City, Kalinga province.
Roque also floated the issue of corruption within the agency.
“The latest of those who really who were abusing the use of public funds... including the SSS,” he said.
The Palace official, however, did not elaborate the matter.
Both SSS executives’ terms expired June last year. They kept positions for nearly a year in a “hold-over capacity.”
La Viña, prior to his assignment as SSS official, was the lead social media operator of Mr. Duterte’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Valdez, on the other hand, was the Law dean of the University of the East.
