Sen. Risa Hontiveros is seeking to have a Senate investigation into the spate of killing of so-called “doctors to the barrios,” the latest of which was an incident in Cotabato Doctors Clinic where the victim was shot dead by the gunman who posed as a patient.
Even as she plans to file a resolution to pave for the conduct of the probe, Hontiveros called on the authorities to conduct a full-scale investigation into the killing last Tuesday of Dr. Sajid “Jaja” Sinolinding.
The slain doctor was the younger brother of Department of Health-Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao Secretary Dr. Kadil Sinolinding Jr.
The victim’s family said that they have been receiving death threats since last year to their exposure of alleged corruption in a school in Arakan, North Cotabato.
The attack happened less than two months after Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas, a fellow volunteer doctor, was killed in Sapad, Lanao del Norte.
Hontiveros yesterday expressed shock and grief over the killing of another volunteer of the government’s Doctor to the Barrios (DTTB) program. She said that the spate of killings victimizing volunteer doctors is no longer an isolated incident, describing it as “a crime against the people.”
The climate of killing, Hontiveros said, poses a serious threat even to people’s access to public health and a mortal danger to those small number willing to volunteer to the government’s DTTB program.
As of 2016, only 320 of the 946 slots were filled in the DTTB program of the DoH, Hontiveros said.
