Kings in semis; Benson abandons SLR
07/17/2008 Sta. Lucia Realty failed to contain Ginebra San Miguel’s rush in offense last night, with the Kings running and gunning all night long with wild abandon as they posted a 113-85 win over the Realtors, who seemed to have lost their heart to play at the Ynares Center after the SLR management let go of import Lee Benson. The lopsided win — actually the seventh straight for the Kings since late in the elimination round — thus completed a sweep of the best-of-three quarterfinal series for the Kings, who advanced to the semifinals opposite Red Bull. The semifinal stint will be the first for the Kings since they made it to last season’s Philippine Cup which they also won via a decisive outcome in the best-of-seven finals over sister team San Miguel Beer. The Realtors, reigning Philippine Cup champions, set out yesterday without the 6-foot-10 former NBA cager, who left the country in a hurry after the Sta. Lucia Management turned down his constant demands for salary increase. Without Benson, the Realtors defense got a big void in the middle — something the Kings took advantage off to dominate and prevent the Realtors from forging a rubber in their quarterfinal series. A Sta. Lucia insider said Benson, who spent eight years in prison after he was convicted of drug trafficking, has been asking for hefty pay from the management, even threatening to leave as early as last week.
