Letran struggles to beat SSC

Letran College scored its fourth straight victory in the elimination round of the 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament yesterday, but not after going through some anxious moments.

The Knights instead found San Sebastian College a tough nut to crack and had to lean on Dino Daa and Alvin Cabonce for the big baskets to pull off a 71-67 win, which nevertheless kept their hot streak going yesterday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Daa scored eight of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter while Cabonce had six points when the Knights unloaded a 13-0 bomb opening the fourth quarter to turn a 45-48 deficit into a 58-48 advantage, enough to send the five-time champions Stags reeling to their fourth loss in five outings.

The Knights, one of the multi-titled teams in the seven-team field, have now notched their fourth win to remain at the helm in what could be another big show of their shining armour that once ruled the country’s oldest and most glamorous league.

The Stags, still hurt by their 83-84 overtime loss to San Beda last Monday, fought back behind the guns of Jimbo Aquino and Jim Viray who teamed for an 8-0 counterattack that moved them within 56-58, with still a good six more minutes left in the game.
