Otacan newest Billiards Idol in Davao edition of tourney

Danny Otacan trounced Angel Jao Kabigting, 11-4, in the finals to complete a sweep and rule the Search for the New Billiards Idol Davao Edition held last weekend at the B3 Bowling Billiards and Bar in NCCC Mall in Davao City.

The victory awarded Otacan, a regular participant in events organized by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP), the top prize of P10,000 at stake in this tournament held in cooperation with the Davao Billiards Association.

Kabigting settled for the runner-up purse of P5,000, while third-placer Romeo Timcang and fourth-placer Ronnie Aying took home P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

A total of 40 aspiring cue artists took part in the two-day tournament sponsored by Bugsy Promotions of businessman Perry Mariano. Some of the came from Cotabato, Tagum City , Agusan del Sur and Surigao.

Otacan made it to the finals by edging out Aying, 9-8, in their semifinals encounter, while Kabigting barged into the title-match after subduing Timcang, 9-7.

Former Asian Games gold medalist and First Senate President Manny Villar Cup Cebu Leg champion Gandy Valle graced the event.

Valle, who is also the BMPAP secretary-general, said Otacan, and majority of those who competed in the tournament will fly to Manila to vie in the Villar Cup Bulacan Leg’s Sipag at Tiyaga division, which starts Monday with the preliminary rounds to be held at the AMF-Puyat Center in StarMall EDSA in Mandaluyong City. The finals will be at the Events Center of SM City in Marilao, Bulacan.

A total pot of P300,000, including the P100,000 champion’s purse, is at stake in the Villar Cup Sipag at Tiyaga Division.

The Villar Cup Bulacan Leg will also have the Pro Elite category, where the likes of Valle and former world champions Efren “Bata” Reyes and Ronnie Alcano will contend for the P400,000 top prize. The competition will also be held in SM City Marilao from July 25 to 27.
