Laborte, partner picked in volley
07/25/2008 Veteran spiker Sheryl Laborte and new partner Nerissa Bautista are the odds-on picks when the third leg of the 2008 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Tournament gets going today at the University of the East (UE)-Caloocan campus. Laborte, a multi-titled champion on the Petron volleyball circuit, is hungry for another crown after an eight-month absence from the series, which organizer Tisha Abundo began almost six years ago. Laborte, the varsity coach of Miriam College, won the battle of champions title crown last year with Bacolod standout Jenny Torres. She is teaming up this time with Bautista, a 5’11” standout from University of San Agustin. Together, they set out against a mixed field of experience collegiate spikers and newcomers, who are making a shift from the indoor game to the sandcourts. Stiff opposition is expected to come from Hannah Suarez and Angela Benting, two of the Adamson University Lady Falcons’ best, along with Ateneo spikers Asia Urquico and Jessica Morado, Sharah So and Pepi Sison. The winners and runners-up of the tournament, backed by Speedo, Mikasa and the UE-Caloocan athletic department, will earn outright berths to the Battle of the Champions at year’s end. Back to top
