Ekwe caper costs Red Lions a big one
07/25/2008 The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) yesterday forfeited San Beda College’s 74-51 victory over St. Benilde last week. The NCAA management committee’s (Mancom’s) decision came as a second whammy for the Red Lions as they are still licking their wounds from a 79-74 upset loss to Jose Rizal University on Wednesday and brought them down to 4-2 (wins-losses). The Lions have nobody to blame but their Nigerian player Sam Ekwe, who played wearing the wrong set of uniform, which according to NCAA mancom chairman Fernando Lozano of Mapua, violated league rules nos. 6.1 and 6.5, which is a serious violation. Those defeats by the Lions left the Letran Knights alone on top with an immaculate slate after six games. The Heavy Bombers, meanwhile, are yet rejoicing despite that big upset of the Lions. Jose Rizal coach Ariel Vanguardia said they have to pull another resounding triumph against dangerous Mapua Institute of Technology before the winning experience really sinks in. “We’re back to work,” Vanguardia said, eyeing another rugged, physical tussle against the Cardinals at the Cuneta Astrodome. “The victory would be nothing if we will drop this one. The boys have high morale and we wanted to capitalize on that.” Julius Manicad Back to top
