San Miguel rookie media pick as Player of the Week

01/06/2009

Coming along just fine.

This was how San Miguel Beer coach Siot Tanquingcen assessed the steady progress being shown by rookie Bonifacio “Bonbon” Custodio, who was adjudged the KFC/Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period Dec. 29 to Jan. 4.

“He played a hell of a ball game,” said Tanquingcen of the 5-foot-11 guard who came off the bench to notch 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists in SMB’s 105-86 victory over Air21 last Sunday that gave the Beermen the last quarterfinals seat in the Philippine Cup.

Those numbers were big leaps in Custodio’s pre-game averages of 10.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

Dondon Hontiveros and Lordy Tugade actually scored more points than Custodio with 18 each. But the Leyte native’s rebounds were just one shy of the taller Jay Washington’s team-high and his assists tied veteran Olsen Racela’s total for most in the game.

The former University of the East Red Warrior also showed some stern stuff in a rugged game that saw Danny Seigle’s right cheek get cut up by an Arwind Santos elbow and as many bodies bangings as there were field goals attempted.

“He showed toughness and maturity that you usually see only from veterans,” Tanquingcen added of the man they tabbed at No. 8 overall in the Rookie Draft, who also had a steal in 30 minutes of action.

“I think he has a bright future ahead of him, so long as he stays hungry and keeps looking to improve.”
