A Gilas boy named Standhardinger

Gilas Pilipinas has yet to submit its full roster for the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, but a pair of prominent players and a newcomer were included in the preliminary list submitted by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
Rising stars Kobe Paras and Kiefer Ravena, as well Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger, are part of the initial list handed by the cage body to the joint Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)-Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) SEA Games task force.
Chief of mission Cynthia Carrion said the names of the three cagers were submitted for the sake of complying with the deadline set by the Malaysian SEA Games Organizing Committee (Masoc).
SBP vowed to submit its final lineup for its men’s and women’s teams on June 27 as the federation would also send a team to the Fiba Asia Cup in Lebanon also in August.
Masoc’s deadline for the submission of rosters is up to June 30, but the PSC-POC joint SEA Games Task Force pegged its deadline last week, June 15.
Carrion told SBP officials that they should submit their final lineup as soon as possible so there would be no reason for a possible disqualification.
“Other countries know that we are strong in men’s basketball. So I told SBP that they should submit their final lineup as soon as possible so other countries will have no reason to disqualify us,” said Carrion, also a member of the POC executive council and president of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines.
Aside from basketball, water skiing, sailing and aquatics have also yet to submit their respective deadlines.
The three sports vowed to submit their respective rosters over the weekend.
POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco is set to formally announce the final composition of the national delegation in an executive council meeting tomorrow.
The Philippines has yet to lose the gold medal in men’s basketball since surrendering it to host country Malaysia in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 1989.
