Adamson, UST set another finals clash

Defending champion Adamson University and University of Santo Tomas showed steely resolve to eliminate their respective semifinals foes yesterday in UAAP Season 80 softball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Lady Falcons overcame National University, 2-1, while the Tigresses needed an extra inning to beat University of the East, 6-5.
For the third consecutive season, Adamson University and UST will face off in the best-of-three championship series starting at 9 am on Tuesday at the same Malate venue.
The game was hanging in the balance until Jeanette Rusia, pouncing on a key Lady Bulldogs error, was able to reach the second base and Flor Pabiania made an intentional walk.
Gelyn Lamata then delivered the winning hit for the Lady Falcons, sending pinchrunner Chrystal Yamut home that got a sigh of relief from coach Ana Santiago.
"Nakaka-touch kasi this is for them, not for me. Yung naging resulta, because of them, not sa coaching staff. Dahil mas ginusto nilang manalo kaya nila nakuha," said Santiago, who is eyeing to steer Adamson University its eighth consecutive title and 17th overall.
The Lady Falcons, who sported a 10-2 record in the eliminations, showcased the championship stuff they made off.
The Lady Warriors were just one out away from forcing a Final Four decider when CJ Roa belted a game-tying homer in the bottom seventh for the Tigresses to send the game into extra.
After UST pitcher Ann Antolihao was successful in holding UE in the top eighth, the EspaƱa-based softbelles escaped with the victory after the Lady Warriors committed a throwing error to close out the game.
With a healthy Antolihao, who missed last year's Game 2 due to a knee injury, UST hopes to make it in the third try.
The Lady Falcons swept the Tigresses in their two elimination round meetings this season.
Baseball Finals will also begin at 12 noon on Tuesday with Adamson University, making its first appearance since completing a three-peat in 2010, facing De La Salle in the best-of-three series.
