Alaska on alert vs Phoenix rebound

7 p.m. GlobalPort vs TNT KaTropa

Alaska could hope nothing would go wrong when it faces a still hurting Phoenix side tonight in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner's Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
But Aces coach Alex Compton is aware of how hurt the Fuel Masters were in their 94-96 loss to defending champion Rain or Shine two Wednesdays ago, that he is leaving nothing to chance when they meet at 4:15 pm today.
The Aces are also seeking to bounce back from a 91-99 loss to Meralco last April 8, a game which saw Alaska losing the boards, 34-60, and surrendering a plus-14 advantage in second chance points.
But the Fuel Masters are looking to stop their back-to-back misfortunes, the last was that loss to the Elasto Painters where they blew away a 17-point lead to accept their fourth defeat in six games.
Alaska is also eyeing a fifth win in six matches, enough to put keep itself in the middle pack of this shortened tournament that is giving way to the Asean Basketball Championship set in May.
TNT Ka Tropa is also eyeing a fifth win in six games against 1-4 GlobalPort at 7 p.m.
"Phoenix is a better team than their record indicates," said Compton. "I thought they were excellent for most of the Rain or Shine game and Rain or Shine just had a great rally at the end.”
Compton enumerated his reasons to keep his team on guard.
"(Jameel) McKay is such an active, aggressive player who really uses his length to his advantage. And Cyrus (Baguio), RJ (Jazul), (Matthew) Wright and JC (Intal) are all playmakers who can both score and create for their teammates," he said.
McKay has been averaging 23.5 points and 18.3 while Baguio, Jazul, Wright and Intal combine for almost 40 points and more than 14 assists per game.
"We will really have to be consistent in guarding them and keeping McKay from absolutely dominating the glass if we want to win this game."
