PSC gives Hidilyn her dream gym

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) yesterday said Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz will get what she wants, days after she openly aired her disgust over the poor state of facilities for weightlifting at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC).

The PSC, through executive director Atty. Sannah Frivaldo, told Diaz a high-performance training facility will be built within the next three months to help national athletes prepare for major international tournaments ahead.
Refurbishing the facilities at the RMSC is one of the main priorities PSC chairman William “Butch” Ramirez vowed to underttake, especially since the country is hosting the 30th Southeast Asian Games in 2019.
In a previous statement, he said that the PSC is planning to improve the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, the Rizal Memorial baseball field, the bowling lanes and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, where boxing competitions of the SEA Games would be staged.
The PSC is also looking at giving the Philippine Center for Sports Medicine (PCSM), the track oval at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City and Teacher’s Camp in Baguio City major facelifts.
Ramirez said funding for the rehabilitation of the venue that was built prior to the 1934 Far Eastern Games is always available.
“We can spend the money as long as it will benefit the athletes,” said Ramirez.
Diaz, the silver medalist in the Rio Olympics last year, tweeted on Wednesday a photo of the dilapidated weightlifting gym at RMSC.
She captioned it: Nagtataka pa ba tayo bakit hanggang ngayon ay wala pa din tayong gold medal sa Olympics? (Do you still wonder why we have not won a gold medal in the Olympics?)
She added that her coach told her that the facility remained in that state since the 1990s.
Frivaldo told her that the rehabilitation of the weightlifting and high-performance gym is in the pipeline.
Construction will be completed within three months.
“Good news! May nanalo na daw sa bidding para sa weightlifting gym at high-performance gym sabi ng executive director ng PSC,” Diaz wrote on her Twitter account @diaz_hidilyn.
“In three months daw magagawa na ang gym. Please! Matagal na po kaming naghihintay.”
